We’ve got to face the truth: winter is here and you know what? It's here to stay for quite some time. Due to poor weather conditions, it feels like everyone is in need of a hard-earned vacation. Just because you can’t afford to jet off somewhere exotic, doesn’t mean you can’t relax and enjoy something local. This year, consider Ottawa as your go-to destination for a day of leisure, and mark my words, you can make it work for under 50$.

1. Get outdoors

Grab a coffee to-go at one of Ottawa’s much-adored cafes (The Ministry of Coffee, Simply Biscotti and Bridgehead are just a few suggestions). Take your warm cup of Joe down to the river and enjoy the winter-ish scenes. Bask in the spectacular capital view as you get your caffeine fix.

2. Grab a bite

You need some food now. Whether you go someplace and have a sit-down meal, or take something to go, Ottawa has a ton of places with exemplary lunch for dirt cheap. For a quick and delicious sandwich on the go, try the deli counter at La Bottega, where sandwiches ring up around five bucks. While you’re at it, you can peruse the Byward Market area, where there are often buskers and other events occurring regularly.

3. Take a free tour

Whether you’re from Ottawa or visiting from out of town, there’s no shame in being a tourist. In fact, you’ll probably discover something you never knew about the city. Some of Ottawa's most attractive and historic locations offer free tours such as Rideau Hall, the Supreme Court, the Karsh-Masson Gallery and the Parliament buildings (don’t miss out on going up the clock tower for your Insta-perfect photo-op).

4. Day at the Museum

More of the indoor-sy type? You should head over to one of Ottawa's many renowned museums. The Canada Science and Technology Museum is best known for its family-friendly vibe and super fun 'Crazy Kitchen.'

5. Refuel

All that sight-seeing can really build up your appetite. There’s no need to a heavy price tag for dinner, though. You can grab an artisan slice for a steal. Pizza lovers need to try either Pavarazzi (miniature to jumbo size offerings here to suit all levels of hunger) or Fiazza Fresh Fired (signature pizzas all range around 10$ and come highly recommended).

6. Tie up Your Skates!

Skating at the Rideau Canal is a must. As the largest naturally frozen skating rink in the world, you and your family will have a blast!
